The Altarpiece in the Vindelev Church
- a gift from the painter Knud Nielsen
For over 30 years, the Vindelev parish council had been looking for a work to replace the church´s old altarpiece. They then received an offer from Knud Nielsen, who lived near the church.
The altarpiece consists of 5 wings that are filled with pictures, and - with the use of a little imagination - the Temptation of Christ on the mountain, the risen Christ, Peter walking on the water, and Noah greeting the dove, etc. can be seen. The artist’s intent in making the altarpiece was to instil a sense of joy and light-heartedness in the beholder.

The old royal seat is believed to have been situated quite close to the church, but because of the cemetery, excavations cannot be undertaken.

The Kings’ Jelling
Jelling is home to the finest Viking Age monuments in Europe: the two largest burial mounds in Denmark, two runic stones and two rows of monoliths.
The smaller runic stone was erected by King Gorm in honour of Queen Thyra. The larger, beautifully decorated stone was erected by King Harald Blue Tooth in commemoration of his parents Gorm and Thyra and of his own achievements: the uniting of the Kingdom of Denmark and the converting of the Danes to Christianity. The larger stone is therefore referred to as Denmark’s certificate of baptism.
